Elder flower cordial

Image
This afternoon, Leopards joined with Tigers to go in search of Elder flowers to make home made cordial.  We headed to the field behind school and were delighted to find 4 trees loaded with Elder flowers, ready to pick. The children carefully selected and collected the flowers ready to bring back to school.    Preparing the cordial The Leopards took charge, collecting all the equipment and and deciding which roles they were going to take after reading the recipe.  They washed the elderflowers. Grated the zest off the lemons.    Measured the sugar and added in to boiling water and stirred it until it dissolved.  All that was left was to squeeze the juice of  the lemons and add it along with the zest to the syrup (to preserve the cordial) and add  the Elder flowers to the syrup. We will now leave the Elder flowers to infuse over night. Tomorrow, it will be time to strain and boil the syrup to sterilise it then bottle it up.

We are all seismologists today

We have been learning all about earthquakes and tectonic plates.  This afternoon we made seismographs so we could have a go at measuring earthquakes. We also looked at the Richter scale and talked about the severity and damage caused by some earthquakes

Cyclo- cross

We have had a fantastic afternoon competing in the Cyclo-cross event at Peak Dale.  The children started by getting the grips with the Cyclo-cross bikes (similar to a racing bike but with grippier tyres for off roading). They practised using the brakes and gears, which were in different places to a mountain bike, before the races began. The children were split into mixed aged teams of 6. There were 4 races: the girls race, the boys race, a relay race and the fun race.      I was very impressed with how well the children managed to navigate around the hilly, twisty course as well as avoiding each other. They showed great determination and grew in confidence as the afternoon went on. At the end of the afternoon the green team- 'The Gladiators' were awarded 2nd place overall for their efforts in the races.  As ever, the children made us incredibly proud with their superb attitudes, well done everyone! A special thank you also goes to the parents who helped with transport, it is v

Strange happenings in Leopards class today

Image
This morning we were surprised to see a strange chair appear in our classroom. This chair was smallish and covered in a white cloth. We noticed it had wooden legs not like any of the ones we had in the classroom and looked a little old.  We have asked lots of questions about the chair to see if we can figure out where it’s come from. Do you know anything about the chair?
