Blackberry mission

Image
Over the last few weeks, we've been on a mission to make Blackberry jam. We started by going on a walk around Taddington (led by the locals) to collect the Blackberries. The children worked so well together as a team that they were very fruitful. The children decided that whilst we were walking, it would be a good idea to take some bin bags and do a spot of letter picking at the same time, this proved to be less fruitful, which we were delighted about. On our return, we froze the berries, ready for the next week. The following week, we made the jam. The children split into 3 groups and rotated around the different activities. As a collective they managed to; split the wood using a bill hook and mallet ready to use for kindling, collect birch bark to start the fire, light the fire, maintain the fire. They also, prepared the Blackberries, added the other ingredients to the mixture and cooked the jam on the fire. The jam was then left to cool and transferred into jars for t...

Fun with friction

Yesterday afternoon we were investigating the effects of friction on different surfaces. We tested a variety of surfaces and recorded how well the tub moved on them. Here we are in the middle of our investigation. We will let you know what we find out

Rocket building

Image
Today as the entry point for our new topic we began to design rockets to take supplies to the International Space Station. We only had a few things we could use to make our rockets and they had to transport vital supplies from Earth to the ISS. We have had a really fun day researching, designing and making the rockets and are hoping that tomorrow we will be able to launch them and send the men and women on the ISS their supplies.

Outdoor learning

Image
As part of our outdoor learning this week we took part in an alphabet challenge where we had to create something natural using the letters in our names. We weren’t allowed to just collect something so no leaves for the letter l but we had to make something instead. We had a great time making these and some were particularly creative as I’m sure you’ll agree.

Visitors in class today

Image
This afternoon we had some fluffy visitors in the classroom. Mrs Cooper and Miss Furness have been incubating and looking after the chicks which have hatched this week. We couldn’t resist having a little cuddle though as they are adorable.

Exploring Christian pilgrimage

We found out what a pilgrimage is and explored some of the places a Christian might choose to go on a pilgrimage. These are some of our findings and thoughts.

Buzzing about books

Image
Leopards had a lovely time scouring the library bookshelves to find books on our scavenger hunt this morning. I was very impressed by their knowledge of book genres, characters and settings . There was a real buzz about books and the children thoroughly enjoyed settling down to some independent reading afterwards.  Hopefully they have been inspired to try out some different genres and authors.  Our book raffle is going really well and lots of children are earning their 60 minute raffle ticket each week. Happy reading Leopards! Mrs W
