Science was very messy, but lots of fun!
This week, we were learning about the digestion system and |Mrs Williams thought it would be a good idea to get stuck in and really see what's going on inside our bodies. (Well, almost!)
We had a very messy experiment, where we had to add food - cream crackers, banana - and lemon juice (which represents stomach acid) into a plastic sandwich bag. The bag represents the stomach.
Next, we added water, which represents saliva. We squeezed all the air out and sealed the bag.
We squeezed the bag for 2 or 3 minutes to smash up the mixture inside. This mimics the action of our stomach walls breaking down food. It looked disgusting! (Little did we know that the worst was yet to come!)
We transferred the contents into a leg off a pair of tights. (Hope someone doesn't notice their tights have been 'borrowed') The tights represents the small intestine.
We squeezed the food through the stocking.
This was very messy! (But we seem to LOVE messy and disgusting!)
The liquid that ends up in the dish represents the nutrients that are absorbed by the body and used for growth and energy.
It took teamwork and a lot of effort. (In real life there is 7 metres to travel along.)
We carried on squeezing. This represented food moving into the large intestine. The food that remains inside the tights represents the waste that can’t be absorbed by the body.
The last part was very popular as we squeezed the remaining food out of the end. This represents going to the toilet.
