Science: focussing on the stem 🌷🌱
In Science, we have been exploring the functions of plants.
Last week, we explored vascular plants. Vascular plants contain tubes called vessels. We learnt that water and nutrients travels through these vessels known as xylem and phloem.
Xylem carry the water and nutrients around a plant and the phloem carries the food made by the leaves.
In order to help the children visualise this process we carried out our own investigation using celery.
We placed a piece of celery into a beaker containing water and red food colouring we left it over night and observed the results the following day. The children could see where the water had travelled all the way upto to the leaves. We then cut and dissected the stem so that we could examine the vessels closely.
