Exploring Islamic Art 🎨

Image
This afternoon, year 3 and 4 were introduced to Islamic Art. We discussed the significant qualities and intentions of Islamic Art. The children had time to explore  geometric shapes, tessellating patterns and motifs more closely by using a range of 2-D geometric shapes to make symmetrical and repeating patterns.  After exploration, the children took to their sketchbooks to create their own patterns. We analysed each others work and discussed the use of symmetry and they ways we had made our shapes tessellate.

Heart smart ❤️

Words Have Power  During today’s Heartsmart session we were discussing the consequences of words we use.  Sat in a circle, the children passed around an apple and had to say something kind of encouraging to the apple. We then passed round a second apple and the children had to say mean and unkind things to it.  We then cut the two apples open. The apple we had been kind to looked healthy and tasty however the apple we were unkind to looked bruised and damaged.  By doing this task, we were able to recognise the effect words can have. Using unkind words can leave a person bruised and damaged even if they don’t show it on the outside therefore we must always be encouraging and use kind words to ourselves and those around us ❤️

Mummification 🍅

Image
Yesterday in English, we explored the process of mummification. The children worked together to organise their picture cards into the order they believed to be correct before we read how mummification actually worked.  Once we knew the procedure, we had a go at mummifying a tomato using the steps they did in ancient Egypt 🍅

How we Learn - part 2 🧠🧐

Image
This week we have continued to work through our ‘how we learn’ sessions. Today the children engaged in an exciting (and very messy) partner task.  One student had to sit facing forward with their arms behind their back and the other crouched behind them with their arms through to the front to provide the arms for the other student. The task was to give a live demonstration of how to make a jam sandwich (tv cooking show style!) 🥪 Once the children had each had a go at the task (and cleaned up all the jam!) we discussed which of the 4 r’s we had used. The children recognised that they had been working in a reciprocal way using their collaborative skills!
